The old adage is that you only need two things for a successful wedding — a cute flower girl and a radiant bride. The English would go so far as to demand an open bar (don’t worry, that’ll be covered), but that’s splitting hairs.
Most of you are thoroughly familiar with the radiant bride, but I thought I would share a story about the cute flower girl.
Sophie is Wendy’s daughter. Wendy is going to be in the wedding party as the Matron of Honor. Sophie is deeply in love with both of us. It was a natural fit for Sophie to be the flower girl.
She doesn’t actually understand what’s going on here, but every girl (from birth) wants to be a princess.
When we first got to the bridal shop, Sophie started running up and down the aisles, picking out pretty dresses (she pretty much pointed to all of them). We picked out a few dresses and headed to a dressing room. I should clarify, Jessica and Wendy picked out a few dresses for Sophie, and I watched.
As opposed to my expereince trying to get Gina’s son into a tiny rented tuxedo before her wedding, little girls are actually anxious to get into the pretty clothes. She walked out (tripping over the length of the dress) to the mirrored wall.
Every woman in the shop was cooing and fawning over this kid. Grandmothers were motioning for their daughters and granddaughters to look. Sophie repeatedly pleaded with Wendy to “take it home” and that she would “put it in her seat belt” (presumably to keep it safe from harm).
Other brides are telling her how pretty she is (which is only stoking the ego) and she’s loving every minute of the attention. Jessica and Wendy are talking about the fit and when would be the optimum time to purchase the dress, but Sophie is lost in her own little world. She wants to accessorize.
The clerk had brought over a few little tiaras, hair accessories, and shoes. And it got even cuter (it went to eleven!).
At one point, she had three of the tiaras on her head. The lady helping us out was showing her different ways her hair could be done up to look the nicest. Sophie was in pure ecstasy.
There were other little girls in the shop, being fitted for dresses (I assume, for the same role). Most seemed like they would rather be elsewhere. They were unsure of themselves and weren’t comfortable in the foreign clothes. Not this one. She was made for the big stage.
